Nota d'usoIn ambito sportivo il sostantivo champion, diversamente da “campione”, non può essere usato da solo, ma è sempre accompagnato dall'evento in questione: ex-world champion, ex campione del mondo. Quando si parla di un campione nel senso generico di “grande atleta”, in inglese si usa la parola star: That swimmer is a star, quel nuotatore è un campione (non That swimmer is a champion); Inter have a team full of stars, l'Inter è una squadra piena di campioni. Inoltre, per riferirsi a un membro di una squadra che ha vinto la coppa del mondo si usa l'espressione World Cup winner: Cannavaro is a World Cup winner, Cannavaro è un campione del mondo (non Cannavaro is a World Cup champion).
